New Brain Institute’s

Deep TMS Overview

Depression is a treatable condition, but for some people, standard treatments aren’t effective. New Brain Institute’s Deep  Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when other depression treatments haven’t been effective.

New Brain Institute’s Deep Transactional painlessly stimulates nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression. And it targets regions of the brain that have decreased activity in people with depression.

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is a non-invasive depression treatment.  It uses magnetism to stimulate the brain. It is extremely safe with minimal side effects and proven to be effective by scientific, extensive research and approved by the Federal drug administration (FDA).  It can be used for patients suffering from depression who have not achieved satisfactory improvements from prior antidepressants. It may also be used in certain circumstances as an alternative for antidepressants in patients with depression.   It is an amazingly effective treatment for OCD, Anxiety, PTSD, Chronic pain disorder, bipolar disorder, and tinnitus.

Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)? Safe?

TMS is extremely safe with minimal side effects and is proven to be effective by scientific, extensive research and approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA).

Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)? approved by the FDA for the treatment of Depression?

The FDA approved TMS in 2008 as a treatment to alleviate symptoms of mildly treatment-resistant depression, in which patients have not found relief from antidepressant medication. It has also been studied as a treatment for a number of other disorders, such as schizophrenia, pain, stroke, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Who is New Brain Institute Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) best candidate?

New Brain Institute TMS treatment can be used for patients suffering from depression or other brain disorders (such as OCD, Anxiety, Tinnitus, PTSD, Chronic pain disorder, bipolar disorder) who have not achieved satisfactory improvements from  prior antidepressants.

Can Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) be used as an alternative for antidepressant drugs?

Yes, New Brain Insitute Deep TMS treatment  may  be used in certain circumstances as an alternative for antidepressants in patients with depression.

Will I gain weight because of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation(TMS)?

There is no weight gain  associated with New Brain Insitute’s  Deep TMS.

How will Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) impacts my sexual life?

There is no sexual dysfunction associated with TMS.

Will I experience memory loss with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

There is no memory loss associated with TMS, as opposed to electroconvulsive therapy (also known as ECT or shock therapy).

What anesthetic is used with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

New Brain Institute’s Deep TMS isn’t invasive, doesn’t require anesthesia and is be performed in our  office. There is no need for anesthetic,  as opposed to electroconvulsive therapy (also known as ECT or shock therapy).

Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) the same as ECT?

ECT uses an electrical current to create a therapeutic seizure, which causes a dramatic reset of the brain.  TMS uses magnetic coils to create electrical currents that stimulate the brain.  One shocks, while the other stimulates.

What is the difference between New Brain Institute TMS treatment and Neurostar?

Although safe,  NeuroStar technology is often times more superficial and stimulates the brain cells only in certain directions. The treatment sessions are also twice as long as New Brain’s session.   New Brain Institute’s Deep TMS technology  creates Deep TMS, which stimulates deeper structures in the brain and also is more multidirectional, so neurons in different orientations may also be stimulated, so it is likely to be more effective.

Also, New Brain Institute’s brain mapping sessions — which is used to  locate precisely the area of the brain to be stimulated, are easier, take less time, and may be more accurate with New Brain Institute’s Deep TMS technology.

How long is each Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) session?

New Brain Insititute’s Deep TMS treatments are about 20 minutes in short 20-second intervals.

Will I be awake during the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments?

Yes. You will be fully awake and  can speak to our staff at any time. You will be seating in a relaxing and comfortable chair.

What will happen during my first treatment at New Brain Institute using Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

During your first treatment, our doctor will  determine how to most effectively administer treatment.

Our psychiatrist will perform a test to identify the minimal amount of electric field necessary to stimulate your brain.  Each treatment is 100%  customized to each patient, so we can  deliver the correct treatment dose the specific area of your brain, which is targeted for depression or other brain disorders.

How does a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) feels like?

New Brain Institute’s  Deep TMS feels like tapping on your scalp.   Adjustments can always be made to ensure  your complete comfort.

What are the most common side-effects associated with New Brain Institute's Deep TMS?

New Brain Institute’s Deep TMs has :

  • no systemic side effects
  • none of the side effects associated with antidepressant medications
  • no weight gain
  • no sexual dysfunction
  • no sedation
  • no memory impairment
  • no memory loss as with electroconvulsive therapy (also known as ECT or shock therapy).
  • no  need for anesthetic as with electroconvulsive therapy (also known as ECT or shock therapy).

Some individuals might experience side effects that are generally mild to moderate and improve shortly after an individual session and decrease over time with additional sessions. They may include:

  • Headache
  • Scalp discomfort at the site of stimulation
  • Tingling, spasms or twitching of facial muscles
  • Lightheadedness

What is the downtime? When can I resume my normal activities?

There is no downtime.  You may resume your normal activities immediately following each treatment session.  You don’t need to arrange for someone to drive you home after treatment — unless, for the first treatment, you prefer a driver until you get a sense of how you’ll feel afterward.

Does insurance cover the cost of New Brain Institute's Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

In 2013, several commercial health insurance plans in the United States started to cover TMS for the treatment of depression.  New Brain Institute’s staff will be happy to verify your insurance coverage and guide you through the next step.
